Literature - my recommendations
There is plenty of wonderful literature to assist with studies or just improve your knowledge, but here are just a few of my favourite recommendations:-
For pilates, anything from the Body Control Pilates site will be well laid out and easy to follow.
The Official Body Control Pilates Manual
Is an excellent book for beginners to intermediate level giving you lots of basic Pilates information; easy to access with clear illustrations and routines for different problems.
The Complete Classical Pilates Method
Shows Joseph Pilates classical exercises clearly laid out; suitable for advanced or more athletic students.
Relax Your Neck Liberate Your Shoulders - Eric Franklin
All of Eric Franklin’s books are an inspiration of imagery and body awareness if you are fascinated by movement and the ability to release tension and exploring anatomy these are essential reading. This book is a slim volume and an easy place to start learning his approach to relaxation and ease of movement, have lungs like clouds and muscles like silk!
Anatomy Trains - Tom Myers
Coming rom Rolfing background and extensive dissection of cadavers Tom has shown how the interconnective tissue links the body. It shows clearly how structural problems are referred through the fascia connections. After the International Conference on Fascia I attended in Boston 07, he said publicly with great honesty he had ‘written the book ahead of the scientific basis but now realised we are even more cross referred with fascial tissues than he had originally thought’. These fascial connections are down to a cell level, through the cell cytoskeleton to the nucleus. This has huge implications for surgical procedures.
Atlas of Human Anatomy - Frank H Netter MD
It is full of fabulous clear hand painted anatomy illustrations and reasonably priced for anatomy books!
Anatomy of Movement - Blandine Calais-Germain
Is excellent for looking at the roll of muscles in movement with very clear line drawings.
Principles of Anatomy and Physiology
- Tortora & Derrickson
Is a well established excellent book for detailed study into physiology. Rather a tome, but well laid out with objectives, questions and summaries to each chapter including related medical terminology.
The Biology of Belief - Bruce H Lipton
Bruce Lipton a cellular biologist uniting biology to quantum physics in a fun easily understandable and a fascinating read on the basic development of cell level mechanics; how proteins are believed to work and more recent theories.
Energy Medicine The Scientific Basis - James L Oschman
I met James at the Fascia conference in Boston; a distinguished American cell biologist with a career in academic science, now a world authority on energy and complementary medicine. A charming and generous man, his book is best dipped into as it is a rather dense read front to back but is packed full of fascinating examples from the history of energy medicine to current research well supplied with references. He synthesizes the investigation of the human energetic system related to our world and its self healing potential, encouraging a dialogue between the controversial ‘conventional’ and ‘unconventional’ approaches to health. One of many scientists now prepared to challenge our current paradigm.
